Beyond AIPAC

Billionaires' political money

The 40 billionaires who gave the most to federal campaigns and committees in the 2024 and 2026 election cycles, among the 61 we pulled in full, and where their money went from 2016 to 2026. Their wealth gives them more say in elections than any voter has, so this page shows who they back. We first checked every American on Forbes’s 2026 billionaire lists against the FEC’s records of gifts from individuals.

The richest person on Earth

Elon Musk

Forbes's real-time list put Elon Musk's fortune at $1.007 trillion on Oct. 12, 2026. Forbes revalues it as share prices change (Forbes, Oct. 12, 2026). The table below uses the Forbes 400 2026 figure, $908B on September 15, 2026; the two differ because the lists were drawn on different dates. Gifts filed under Musk’s own name to federal campaigns and committees since 2016 total $272,501,436: 98% to the Republican side and 99% to super PACs.

How these figures are counted

  • Whose money: gifts the FEC lists under the person’s own name (Schedule A, contributions from individuals), matched on their name and home states. Gifts in a spouse’s name, from companies they own, or to nonprofits that do not disclose donors (“dark money”) are not included, and neither is money for state races, so every figure here is a minimum.
  • Trusts and partnerships are not counted: a gift the FEC lists under the name of a trust, partnership or company is left out, even when the trust is the person’s own, because a name-and-state match cannot tell the person’s own trust from another with a similar name. For example, $20.5M that the FEC lists as given to RBG PAC under the name "Elon Musk Revocable Trust" is not in Elon Musk's total.
  • Nothing counted twice: memo entries (a joint fundraising committee’s share passed on to a campaign), the record a conduit such as AIPAC PAC, ActBlue or WinRed files when it passes an earmarked gift on to a campaign, and a candidate’s money for their own campaign are left out; the campaign that received an earmarked gift reports it, and that is the one counted. Refunds are subtracted.
  • Party side: a candidate’s committee takes the candidate’s party and a party committee its own. A super PAC or other PAC takes the side its own spending helped: ads for a party’s candidates or against the other party’s in general elections, and its gifts to candidates and parties (FEC bulk files). At least 75% to one side is that side; less is “both parties”. Opposing a candidate in a primary counts for that candidate’s own party. A joint fundraising committee takes the side of the committees it passed the money to. “Other or unclear” is an independent or third-party candidate, or a committee that reported no such spending (voter-registration and canvassing groups, for example).
  • Who is here: the 40 who gave the most in the 2024 and 2026 cycles among the 61 Forbes-listed billionaires we pulled in full; net worth is Forbes’s figure, from the 2026 Forbes 400 (Sept. 2026) or, for people not on it, the 2026 World’s Billionaires list (April 2026). Each name in the table links to Forbes and each recipient to its own page on fec.gov.
  • What is shown: the money each person gave to each recipient from 2016 to 2026, from the FEC’s public record. A recipient’s total can be a single gift, and recipients under $10,000 are grouped as “other recipients”. This is the one page that names individual donors (ADR-0036); it lists no gift dates, addresses, employers or ZIP codes, and links to no list of a person’s individual gifts.
